SCHENECTADY, NY — Sophomore guard Maria Tobin (Schenectady, NY/Shenendehowa) scored a career high 20 points and sophomore center Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills) had her second double double of the season as the Union women’s basketball team defeated Middlebury, 71-58 at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. Thd Dutchwomen posted their first win of the season (1-3) while the Panthers fell to 3-2 overall after this non-league game.

Ormsby scored 21 points and had a game and career high 13 rebounds in the victory, while making seven of her eight shots from the floor. Sophomore guard Marissa Dwyer (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) scored 14 points off the bench and junior forward Krystal Hammond (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored seven points with eight rebounds for the Dutchwomen.

Middlebury sophomore guard Emily Johnson (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Mt. St. Joseph) led the Panthers with 16 points and sophomore guard Ashley Barron (Brockton, MA/St. Johnsbury Academy, VT) scored 15 while four players had five rebounds each for the visitors. Johnson also dished out four assists.

The Panthers jumped out to a 9-1 lead at 17:14, and led by as many as 10 at 15-5 with 13:52 left in the first. But Union took the lead for the first time at 10:49 on a three-pointer by Selin Whitham (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor), for a 17-15 lead. Middlebury took a 27-26 lead into the break.

Trailing 29-28 with 19:15 left in the second, Union went on a 10-2 run in the next four minutes for a 39-30 lead with 15:15 left. The run was fueled by six points from Ormsby. The Dutchwomen led by as many as 15 points three times. Union shot 52% for the game and 53% from the three-point arc, and had a 40-28 rebounding advantage. The Panthers shot 38% for the night. The Dutchwomen had 23 points off turnovers and outscored the Panthers’ bench, 22-11.

Union will not play home again until January 16. The Dutchwomen play their fifth game in eight days Sunday when they travel to Elms for a 3 p.m. game.
