ST. PAUL, Minn. — Facing the No. 10 ranked team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) pre-season ranking in Mayville State University (N.D.), the Northwestern College (Minn.) men’s basketball team dropped their first game of the season on Saturday night, slipping 83-65 against the visiting Comets in the championship game of the Coca-Cola Tournament. Northwestern was attempting to become the first men’s basketball team ever to claim back-to-back Coca-Cola Tournament titles. With the setback, the Eagles are 1-1 on the year, while Mayville State improved to 3-2 with the victory.

The Comets simply had too many explosive options offensively as they darted out to a 16-to-6 lead just 6 minutes into the affair and never trailed in the remainder of the contest. Mayville State continued to roll over the Eagles leading by as many as 20 points in the opening half and increasing their advantage to 30 points on two occasions in the second half. In the winding minutes of the game, Northwestern was able to cut into their deficit but it was too little, too late as Mayville State cemented the win.

For the second straight night, the Eagles struggled finding their shooting touch, making just 23-of-70 (32.9%) field goal attempts in the game and 9-of-22 (40.9%) from three-point range. On the other end, the Comets shot 48.7 percent (37-of-76) from the field. The big difference came in points in the paint as Mayville State outscored Northwestern by a 56-to-12 margin in points in the paint.

Sophomore guard Steve Discher (Andover, Minn.) paced Northwestern with a team-high 14 points, also grabbing 7 rebounds. Senior Daniel Hanson (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha Academy) and freshman Stephen (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha Academy) chipped in with 10 and 11 points and 6 and 8 rebounds, respectively. Both Hanson brothers were selected to the Coca-Cola All-Tournament Team.

Mayville State featured five players in double-figures, including tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) in Monty Rogers (Murray, Utah), who poured in a game-high 26 points. Andy Parochka (Mayer, Minn.) connected on 5-of-8 field goal attempts to total 14 points, while Tremel Gilot (Chicago, Ill.) owned 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals.

Northwestern College is just 1-1 all-time against Mayville State University, with both games being played on the Eagle’s home floor in the Ericksen Center. Northwestern will aim to get back in the win column on Tuesday, November 21, hosting Macalester College at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference match-up.
