SCHENECTADY, NY — The Skidmore College women’s basketball team scored 46 second-half points to defeat Union College, 74-48, in Liberty League action at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday evening. The Thoroughbreds shot 68% in the second half and were led by four players in double figures, including 19 points from Laurel Brown (South Hamilton, MA/ Loomis Chaffee). Krystal Hammond (Clifton Park, NY/ Shenendehowa) led Union with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The teams played a close first half until Union made a 12-0 run midway through the half to take a commanding 24-12 lead. Sophomore guard Maria Tobin (Schenectady, NY/ Bishop Maginn) sank two-straight three pointers in the stretch, and ended the half with nine points all from beyond the arc.

Skidmore (9-10, 1-7 Liberty) then made an 11-point run to bring the score within one at 23-24, capped by a three-point basket by freshman Sharlyn Harper (New York, NY/ Holderness). The Thoroughbreds took a two-point lead on a jumper from Brown with just under a minute left before Union tied the game headed into halftime at 28-28 on a Hammond layup.

Skidmore opened the second half with a pair of baskets before Kellye Caufield (Monroe, CT/ Masuk) sank the first of seven Skidmore three pointers in the half to take a 35-28 lead. Caulfield finished the night with 16 points.

Union (9-9, 5-3 Liberty)pulled to within 13 midway through the half on a Devon Ciloberto (New Paltz, NY/ New Paltz) trey, but the Thoroughbreds raced ahead to the 74-48 finish.

Skidmore held the Dutchwomen to 27.7% shooting in the final frame, and netted 21 points off of Union’s nine turnovers. The Thoroughbreds gave up 11 second-chance points to the Dutchwomen, who also had 20 points in the paint.
