POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The Vassar College women\'s basketball team ushered in the Barb Bausch era with a convincing 73-43 win over Southern Vermont in the opening round of the Vassar Invitational this evening. The Brewers will face Mitchell College, a 79-78 winner over Oberlin College, in Saturday\'s title game at 3:00 p.m. Oberlin meets Southern Vermont at 1:00 pm.

Bausch, who came to Vassar after spending three years as the assistant coach at Division I Cal-State Fullerton, watched senior center Rachel Cerlen (Florham Park, NJ/Milburn) hit 9-of-13 shots from the field to lead the Brewers with 21 points.

Freshman forward Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland) and sophomore forward Sarah Ames (Lafayette, CA/Athenian) were also in double figures for the Vassar with 13 and 11 points respectively. Freshman forward Emma Carmichael (Brattleboro, VT/Brattleboro Union) added six points and 11 rebounds in her collegiate debut.
Vassar opened up a ten-point advantage early in the first half and remained in control the rest of the way. Cerlen then put the Brewers in front 22-6 with a basket in the paint at the 12-minute mark to key a 10-0 Vasasr run.

With the Brewers leading 37-20 at the break, Vassar started strong in the second half as well and a jumper by Ames extended the Brewers\' advantage to 20, 49-29, with 13 minutes remaining.
The Brewers held Southern Vermont to just 14 field goals and 31 percent shooting from the floor. On the defensive end, Vassar forced 31 Mountaineer turnovers and had 11 steals. Southern Vermont received a game-best 27 points from sophomore guard Shenika Dow (Raleigh, NC).

The Pequots opened their season with 79-78 come from behind victory over Oberlin College. Freshman guard Jennifer Iglesias (Waterbury, CT/Sacred Heart) drained a three-point field goal from the top of the key with four seconds remaining as Mitchell overcame a 20-point second half deficit.

Iglesias finished with a game-high 28 points for Mitchell who trailed 53-33 with 15 minutes to play. Iglesias keyed the Pequots second half run with 11 straight points during Mitchell\'s second half surge. Iglesias also scored the final five points for Mitchell in the final minute where the lead changed hands three times. Sophomore guard Shakeya Evans Manchester/Manchester, CT) added 16 points and six assists for Mitchell
who prevailed despite being out rebounded 57-22.

Oberlin placed four players in double figures led by junior forward Roneisha Kinney (Cleveland, OH/Rhodes) who finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kira Rivera (Pittsburgh, PA/Ambridge Area) scored 15 points for the Yeomen who will face Southern Vermont in the consolation game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
