Hunter led 7-0 before Vassar scored their first points (7-2) by freshman Emma Carmichael (Brattleboro, VT/Brattleboro Union). Hunter and Vassar exchanged baskets over the next few minutes until the Brewers tied the game up, 15-15, with 9:46 remaining. The Hawks would keep their composure and begin to pull away, entering halftime with a 37-29 advantage. Vassar senior Rachel Cerlen (Florham Park, NJ/Milburn) led the Brewers with 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks in the first half.
The second half was similar as both teams mounted separate runs. Cerlen tied the game, 42-42, for Vassar at the 14:47 mark with a putback. The game would be tied four more times over the next nine minutes until Lindsay Meltzer hit two free throws to give Hunter the 55-53 lead with 5:21 left.
The Hawks would hold off the Brewers for the four point victory 62-58.
The Brewers got a 19 point, 14 rebound effort from Cerlen, who was named the Liberty League co-Forward of the Week. In only her third game as a regular, junior Chelsea Katzenberg (Middlesex, VT/U-32) scored a career-high 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the floor. Katzenberg also added a career-high six rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals.
Sophomore forward Shannon Fuhr (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) added eight points and four rebounds.
