Maggiacomo was one of four double-figure scorers for the Red Dragons (4-7). Sophomore Carson Niehoff (West Islip) scored 14 points, senior Dave Jutton (Red Hook) added 13 points along with a team-high six rebounds and freshman Mike Lewis (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) finished with a career-best 10 points. Maggiacomo, Niehoff and Lewis grabbed five rebounds each and sophomore Juan Miolan (Troy) finished with six points and four rebounds.
Junior Sam Simmons (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) led RPI (6-4) with 22 points and 10 rebounds. He made 10-of-16 shots from the field. Senior Clay Hadley (LaGrange, IL/Lyons Township) totaled 11 points, including three baskets from behind the arc.
Cortland shot 47 percent from the field, including 40 percent (10-of-25) from three-point range. The visiting Red Hawks entered the game ranked fourth nationally in Division III in three-point field goal percentage at almost 46 percent, but made only 3-of-17 treys (18 percent) and shot 39 percent overall from the field.
RPI’s lone lead came at 9-8 early in the first half. Cortland led by as many as 12 points in the opening period and took a 37-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. Trailing by 11, RPI used a Hadley three-pointer and two baskets by Simmons to pull within 42-38 with 12:53 left.
The Red Dragons, however, scored the next 13 points, sparked by three-pointers from Maggiacomo, Niehoff and Jutton and capped by a Miolan layup, and led 55-38 with 8:32 remaining. Cortland’s lead was at least 12 the rest of the game.
