SCRANTON, Pa. — Junior forward Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo.) led all players with 18 points and 17 rebounds as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team halted a brief two-game losing streak with a 58-41 victory over Goucher College during the opening round of the Diversified Invitational at the University of Scranton on Friday evening. Leading by three points with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game, Stevens (9-2) used a 7-0 run in the span of 1:50 to take control of the game. Sophomore guard Dani Dudek (Rockaway, N.J.) scored on a lay-up and then drained a three-pointer to get the Ducks going. Junior guard Jean Matusiak (Queens, N.Y.) added a lay-up of her own to put Stevens ahead 41-31 with 11:18 left on the clock.
The Ducks closed out the contest by scoring 12 of the final 15 points over the final 5:25 to blow open an eight-point game. Enright scored six of the 12 points for Stevens during the run.
Dudek finished with 13 points and five steals. She shot 5-for-10 from the floor and was 3-for-5 from downtown. Freshman guard/forward Sarah Gehring (Spokane, Wash.) chipped in with 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists. She made three shots from long range in the game.
Goucher (2-8) was led by junior guard/forward Shadae Swan (Baltimore, Md.), who had 14 points in the loss. Freshman guard Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md.) collected a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with six points.
Stevens shot 32.8 percent (21-for-64) from the field. The Gophers made only 14 of 59 field-goal attempts (23.7 percent) in the game.
With the win, the Ducks advanced to Saturday’s championship game to face the winner of Friday’s other opening-round game between Rutgers University-Camden and Scranton. The title game is set for 3 p.m.
