ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Elizabethtown College is now two wins away from becoming the first NCAA Division III women’s basketball program, and just the third NCAA women’s basketball program ever, from reaching the 900 all-time win plateau. The Blue Jays inched closer with a 75-58 home win over Rutgers-Camden Monday night to improve to 5-2 overall. Elizabethtown carried a 37-25 lead into halftime, and the Blue Jays out-scored Rutgers-Camden (3-3) 38-33 in the second half. The Blue Jays shot 27-for-65 (41.5%) from the field and 6-for-12 (50%) from behind the arc while holding Rutgers-Camden to 20-for-66 (30.3%) from the floor and 5-for-17 (29.4%) from three-point range.
Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Co.) led Elizabethtown in scoring with 35 points, tying her career high, and in rebounds with 11. It was her first career double-double, and her highest single-game rebound total as well. Walton, a junior, now has 971 career points, 29 shy of the 1,000 career mark. Walton went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and has now made her last 40 consecutive free throw attempts. Also hitting career highs in points and rebounds was sophomore Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor), who scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Audrey Hitz (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) pulled down 10 rebounds for Etown, led the team in steals with four, and scored seven points. Megan Romano (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) had a career-high total of nine assists for Etown and added five points. Jenn Montague (Newark, DE/St. Mark’s) scored nine points from off the bench for the Blue Jays.
Imani Hafiz (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) led Rutgers-Camden in scoring with 15 points, tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven, and led all players in the game in steals with eight. She shot 6-for-11 from the field. Karen Carter (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Jennifer Christy (Malaga, NJ/Delsea Regional) and Krystal Jankowski (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) each scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Scarlet Raptors. Jankowski also had five assists to lead the team.
Elizabethtown will return to action and try for 900 this weekend when the team hosts its annual Blue Jay Classic tournament Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9. The Blue Jays will face Briarcliffe College at 8:00 p.m. Friday, while Newport News Apprentice School will take on Penn State-Harrisburg at 6:00 p.m. Friday. The tournament’s consolation game is set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday, and the championship game will be played at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
