Troy, N.Y. — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) made a 13-0 run late in the first half to turn a three-point deficit into a ten-point lead and the Red Hawks never relinquished their advantage on their way to a 66-51 win over Skidmore College in a Liberty League women’s basketball game at Robison Gym.

RPI has now won nine of its last ten games, including five in a row, to improve to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League. Skidmore falls to 6-6 and 0-3.

The visiting Thoroughbreds held a 24-21 lead with 4:17 remaining in the first half before the Red Hawks went on their run. Rensselaer was ahead 34-24 with 41 seconds remaining in the opening half before Skidmore scored again for a halftime score of 34-26. The Thoroughbreds pulled to within four points (40-36) early in the second half but RPI pulled away for the 15-point final margin.

Four student-athletes hit double-digits in scoring for the home team, led by senior Kristi Baranowski (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), who had a game-high 14 points with 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Whitney Coleman (Etiwanda, CA/Etiwanda) also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. She also had a game-high four assists. Elizabeth Barker (Springfield, MA/Cathedral) added 11 points and Tory Lyons (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) scored 10 points.

For Skidmore, three players had 11 points apiece, including sophomore forward Laura Michel (Middle Village, NY/Christ the King), sophomore guard Kellye Caufield (Monroe, CT/Masuk), and senior forward Krystal Coke (Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep Country Day). Coke also had a team-high seven rebounds before fouling out.

Rensselaer returns to the court on Tuesday at Liberty League foe Vassar (6pm). The Thoroughbreds are back in action on Monday morning at 11am against SUNY Potsdam in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
