ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Freshman Whitney Smith scored a game-high 17 points to lead host Nazareth over Alfred in an Empire 8 conference game. The victory improved the Golden Flyers' record to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play and dropped Alfred's record to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8.

Alfred led through most of the game and at halftime 28-26 thanks to clutch shooting by freshman Lisa Button and senior Megan Sampsell.

Nazareth overcame 22 turnovers, most in the first half, to outscore the Saxons 40-26 in the second half.

Freshman Whitney Smith hit two of her 3 three-pointers and nine of her 11 free throw attempts in addition to grabbing 11 rebounds to guide Nazareth to the victory. Junior Ali Sharpe added 12 points and five rebounds after coming off the bench. Nazareth took control in the final 4:00 as Smith and Sharpe hit foul shots to widen the final margin of victory.

The Golden Flyers host St. John Fisher tomorrow in another Empire 8 conference game before beginning the JP Morgan Chase next week.
