The Alfred University women’s basketball team lost at home to Nazareth College, 80-73, Saturday afternoon at the McLane Center.
Alfred (4-16, 0-9 Empire 8) shot 43 percent from the floor (36 percent from three-point range) and made 79 percent of its free throws. But visiting Nazareth (7-13, 3-6 Empire 8) made 50 percent of its three-pointers (nine of 18) and sunk 21 of 34 free throws to help overcome a 37-32 rebounding disadvantage.
Senior guard Megan Sampsell scored a game-high 25 points for AU, making four of six field goal attempts (three of four from three-point range) and sinking all 14 of her free throw attempts.
Sophomore guard Melanie Jackson scored 13 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman forwards Libby Meier and Hannah Meier added 12 and 11 points, respectively for Alfred.
Kelly Dunne scored 18 points, making four of five three-pointers, to pace Nazareth. Whitney Smith tallied 13 points and five rebounds, while Sarah Homer scored 12 to go with three steals.
Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 6 p.m. at St. John Fisher.
