ST. PAUL, Minn. — Leading 23-to-18 with 16:39 remaining in the second half, the Northwestern College (Minn.) women’s basketball team appeared to be in contention for their first win of the season. The visiting Hamline University (Minn.) Pipers thought otherwise as they quickly turned the momentum and rolled in the second half to post a 52-37 victory on the Eagle’s home floor. With the win, Hamline improved to 1-1 on the season, while Northwestern fell to 0-4 overall in their 2006-2007 campaign. Poor shooting continued to plague Northwestern in the opening half, while offensive rebounds for the Pipers in the second half proved to be the difference.

The Eagles were unable to net a field goal in the first seven and a half minutes, scoring their first points of the game on a three-point field goal with 12:39 left in the opening period. Hamline University owned their largest lead of the half at 8:38, moving in front 14-to-3. From there, Northwestern slowly chipped away at their deficit and finished the half on a 9-0 run to put the halftime score at 17-15, still in favor of the Pipers.

Northwestern recorded just five made field goals in the first half, shooting 22.7 percent (5-for-22) from the floor and 21.4 percent (3-for-14) from three-point range. Thankfully for the Eagles, Hamline also found the Ericksen Center rims to be unfriendly, sinking just 6-of-22 (27.3%) field goal attempts in the first twenty minutes of play.

Starting the second half with a bang, the Eagles produced an 8-to-1 run covering the first four minutes to jump out to a 23-to-18 lead. Hamline answered, tying the game at 23-to-23 and again at 27-to-27. The Pipers then took the lead for good, boasting a 10-0 run and increasing their advantage to as many as 19 points late in the game, before finishing the contest with a 52-to-37 triumph.

Hamline University owned a 22-to-12 advantage in points in the paint, pulling down 13 offensive rebounds in the second half and 18 in the game. The Pipers out-rebounded Northwestern by a 50-to-33 margin in the affair. Both teams struggled to find their shooting touch as the Eagles connected on just 15-of-53 (28.3%) field goal attempts and 4-of-23 (17.4%) from three-point range, while Hamline was successful on 16-of-48 (27.3%) from the floor and 15-of-30 (50.0%) from the free throw line.

In a very balanced attack, sophomore guard Luanne Toews (Lustre, Mont./Lustre Christian) paced Northwestern with a team-high 9 points, making 4-of-7 field goal attempts. Her 9 points is a new career-high for single-game points scored. Senior guard Julie Ross (New Hope, Minn./Cooper High School) and junior guard Kelly Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) each chipped in 8 points, with Ross also adding 7 rebounds.

For Hamline University, Krystal Tschumperlin (Watkins, Minn./Eden-Valley-Watkins) was the lone Piper to reach double-figures for points, netting a game-high 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Ashlee Senser (Edina, Minn./Hopkins) contributed 9 points and 6 rebounds, while Shelby Hyllengren (Cannon Falls, Minn.) put in 8 points while also racking up a game-high 17 rebounds.

Northwestern College is now 18-6 all-time against Hamline and 10-2 all-time at home against the Pipers. The Eagles had previously won each of their last eight meetings dating back to the 1994-1995 season. Northwestern will next be in action on Friday, December 1, taking on Mount Mercy College (Iowa) at 2 p.m. at the Trinity International University Tournament in Deerfield, Illinois.
