Catherine Cristino (Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck), Megan Kelley (Newtown, CT/Newtown) and Kara Burnham (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) each had 11 points as MSU improved to 3-4 overall in winning its conference opener (1-0) and moved to 28-14 all-time against the Scarlet Raptors.
Junior Carmen Oyola (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) had eight points for Rutgers-Camden (3-2, 0-1 NJAC), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
The Red Hawks raced out to a 15-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest as Machin got the ball rolling with a layup two minutes into the game and added another before Jessica Horan (West Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) drained a three-pointer as Montclair took a 7-0 advantage. Machin would convert a three-point play and Horan followed with another long-range three before Jessica Garrabrant (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) capped the run with a short jumper as the Red Hawks held the 15-point lead with 15:22 to go.
Imani Hafiz (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) would snap the MSU run with a pair of free throws, but Montclair went on a 13-0 run keyed by Machin who had five of her 20 first-half points in the spurt. Meanwhile the Scarlet Raptors struggled, misfiring on their first 14 shots of the game before Alexis Culbreath (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) made a layup with 8:36 left.
While the Scarlet Raptors struggled from the field, Montclair State had its shooting touch as the Red Hawks shot 18-of-35 from the field in the opening half, including 4-of-8 from three-point range and led 48-13 at intermission. Montclair finished the game 36-of-66 from the floor (54.5 percent) and also held a 56-31 advantage on the boards, including 18 on the offensive glass.
Machin finished 10-of-14 from the floor and made two steals as she moved up two spots on the all-time MSU scoring list into seventh place (1,259 points). Garrabrant collected 10 points, eight rebounds and five steals while guard Marianne McGovern (Fair Lawn, NJ/Paramus Catholic) had six points and a team-high eight assists.
Culbreath posted six points and four steals for Rutgers-Camden, which got 10 rebounds and a steal from Krystal Jankowski (Somerale, NJ/Sterling).
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, December 6 as the Red Hawks travel the short distance to Wayne, NJ to face backyard rival William Paterson at 8:00 pm. Rutgers-Camden will head to Elizabethtown, PA to take on Elizabethtown College on Monday, December 4 at 7:30 pm.
