ONEONTA, N.Y. —

Elmira sank 5-6 free-throws down the stretch, with Danielle Troutman converting 4-4, to beat Hartwick 73-69 in women’s basketball action on Friday night at Binder Gymnasium. The Hawk’s Mara Tichy recorded a game-high 23 points and added 10 rebounds in the loss for Hartwick. Elmira improves to 15-4 (7-1 E8), while Hartwick falls to 5-12 (3-6).

Hartwick fell behind early as Elmira jumped out to a 14-6 lead to open the game. Tichy recorded five unanswered points to cut the lead to three and the Hawks took their first lead of the game with 11:59 to play (17-16). The Soaring Eagles reclaimed the lead with 5:38 to play on a pair of free-throws from Tasha Lopez-Pitts (28-26) and would take a two-point lead into the half, up 36-34.

The second half opened with both teams having their way offensively. The teams traded baskets and saw the seventh tie of the game with 10:42 to play in regulation when Hartwick’s Sam Galm finished an Alanna Adams feed for a 57-57 score. The score was tied once again (67-67) with 3:02 to play but the Soaring Eagles were able to convert from the charity stripe to seal the 73-69 victory.

Tichy led all scorers with 23 points and chipped in 10 rebounds. Lindsay Wilson added 16 points and seven assists, and Galm recorded her second double-double of her career with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds off the bench for the Hawks.

Marcia Coakley led Elmira with 19 points and added five steals. Kourtney Troutman had 15 points and six boards, and Bridget Catanese recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hawks will take on Ithaca Collage tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Binder Gymnasium.
