ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women’s basketball team lost at home to Elmira College, 76-55, Saturday afternoon at the McLane Center.
Alfred (4-14, 0-7 Empire 8) was hurt by poor shooting from the field and turnovers, as the Lady Saxons made only 27 percent of their shots and committed 31 miscues. Elmira, by contrast, made 47 percent of its shots. The visiting Soaring Eagles (14-4, 6-1 Empire 8) overcame 26 turnovers and a 53-43 disadvantage in rebounding.
Sophomore guard Melanie Jackson came an assist short of a triple-double, tallying 10 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists. She also had four steals.
Freshman guard Lisa Button and freshman forward Danielle Cooper each scored a team-high 11 points for the Lady Saxons, while senior point guard Meg Sampsell had 10 points and freshman forward Libby Meier had six points and 10 rebounds.
Mary Symonds scored a game-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds to pace Elmira. Britta Anderson had nine points and Marcia Coakley added eight points and six boards.
Alfred is in action next on Friday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. at home against RIT.
