Washington U. 102, Case Western Reserve 33

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — The Saint John’s University basketball team shot 66 percent from the field, 72 percent in the first half, to top Hamline, 97-71 at Sexton Arena Wednesday night.

Senior center Craig Schafer (Anoka, Minn.) scored a game-high 21 points and added six rebounds. Junior wing Ryan Lieser (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) helped the Johnnies’ cause, going 8-of-10 from the field for 20 points on the night, all in the first half. Lieser played eight minutes in the second half but failed to take a shot. Lieser, senior point guard Matt Ohme (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and junior point guard Nick Johnson (Plato, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) each had five assists on the night.

Sophomore guard Jon DeRock (Buffalo Lake, Minn./Buffalo Lake-Hector) led the Pipers with 19 points and sophomore forward Tony Thrasher (Hustisford, Wis.) added nine. Hamline was out-rebounded 39-26 and shot 36 percent in the contest. The Johnnies also held a 48-12 advantage in points in the paint.

The Johnnies (19-5, 17-2 MIAC) will travel to St. Paul on Saturday, Feb. 17 to face #8 St. Thomas in what will be for the regular season MIAC championship. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Schoenecker Arena. Hamline (8-16, 6-13 MIAC) will end its 2006-07 season by playing host to Macalester this Saturday with the tip-off set for 1 p.m. in St. Paul. The Johnnies have now won 19 consecutive MIAC regular season home games. With the win, SJU head coach Jim Smith now has 669 career coaching victories.
