St. John Fisher 66, Geneseo State 59

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — In MASCAC men’s basketball action this evening from the Tinsley Center, sophomore forward Roland Millien (Stoughton, MA) posted his second straight double-double to lead the host Bears of Bridgewater State College to a 73-58 win over Westfield State.

Millien scored 14 points on 4 of 5 shooting and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds as the Bears improved to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the MASCAC.

The Bears limited the Owls to just 28% (18-for-65) shooting and took advantage of numerous trips to the free throw line. After connecting on just 6 of 15 free throw attempts in the first half, the Bears rebounded with a 23-for-24 performance from the charity stripe in the second stanza.

Senior center Derek Thompson (Hyannis, MA), who, along with junior guard Tom Cuddihy (Scituate, MA) led all scorers with 20 points, missed all four of his free throw attempts in the first half but then went a perfect 10-for-10 at the line in the second half.

BSC held a 12-point advantage at the half (35-23) with Cuddihy scoring 12 of his 20 points in the opening stanza. Westfield cut the lead down to four points twice in the second half, but could get no closer. Leading 45-41 with 8 ½ minutes remaining in the second half, the Bears went on a 10-0 run led by Thompson and Millien to put the game out of reach. BSC built the lead up to as much as 17 points (63-46) before settling for the 15-point victory.

Also finishing in double-figures for the Bears was senior guard Adam Rose (Harwich, MA) who scored 14 points while adding 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

Westfield sophomore guard Dave Jaehnig (Quincy, MA), last season’s MASCAC Rookie of the Year, led the way for the Owls as he posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Six of his 11 boards came off the offensive glass as the Owls held a 19-8 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Bridgewater will be back in action on Thursday night as the Bears travel to Endicott for a 7 o’clock game with the Gulls. Westfield is back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Worcester State College at 3.
