ALBION, Mich. — Albion College turned in one of its best efforts of the season, connecting on nearly 51 percent of its shots from the field and receiving a career-high 20 points from Drew Yancey but it wasn’t enough as Adrian College came back from 14 points down at halftime to stun the Britons 81-76 in overtime in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball game at Kresge Gymnasium Wednesday night.

Andrew Holms and Zak Silas added 20 and 18 points, respectively, for the Britons.

Albion knocked down 55.6 percent (20-of-36) of its shots from the field and grabbed 11 offensive rebounds as it built a 42-28 lead at halftime. The Britons controlled the first half, building a 15-4 lead on a tip-in by Jim Cash five minutes into the game.

The only thing that kept Adrian in the game was its ability to take advantage of Albion’s turnovers. The Britons turned the ball over six times in the first half, and the Bulldogs cashed in with 13 points.

Adrian connected on 5-of-9 shots from the field to begin the second half, but Albion maintained an 11-point lead on Holms’ basket with 12 ½ minutes remaining in regulation.

Adrian chipped away at the Albion lead; first going on a 9-2 run that trimmed the margin to four, 54-50, with 10:12 left in regulation.

Silas twice built Albion’s lead back up to seven on a 3-point goal and another jumper, but Adrian would not go away as Lamar Cardenas and Andy Kubish produced 3-point goals as the margin shrank to 59-58 with 7:41 left. Adrian took its first lead of the game on a Cardenas layup that made the score 62-61 with 5:31 left.

Neither team led by more than two points down the stretch as Holms forced overtime with a layup with 21 seconds on the clock.

D.J. Mocini scored a 3-point goal and Holms and Silas added free throws as Albion built a 76-73 lead midway through overtime. The Britons misfired on their last six shots.

After a Cardenas layup drew the Bulldogs within one, Desmond Young put Adrian in front for good with a pair of free throws. Young led all players with 24 points. Cardenas finished with 15.

Albion will travel to Angola, Ind., on Saturday for its first meeting of the year with Tri-State University.
