Jersey City, NJ — LATE 11-1 RUN GIVES SUNY-BROCKPORT 2006 GOTHIC KNIGHT TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT TITLE

SUNY-Brockport completed a second-half comeback by reeling off an 11- run in the final 3:05, as the Golden Eagles outlasted New Jersey City University, 71-62, to win the championship of the Gothic Knight Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by NJCU at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

Brockport won despite NJCU receiving a game and career-high 25 points—including 16 in the second half—from senior point guard LATRESE McNAIR (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth), and the Eagles overcame an NJCU offense which shot 50 percent (15-30) in the second half.

However, the Eagles, who converted more free throws (18-22, 81.8%) than NJCU attempted (8-13, 61.5%), were a proficient 88.2 percent from the stripe in the second half, making 15-of-17.

Junior guard Ashley Broadhurst (Sauquoit, NY/Utica Notre Dame) was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament,
after she accumulated 31 points, 10 assists and seven steals in two games. In the win over NJCU, she scored 18 points (5-16 FG) and was 7-of-8 from the line, with four assists and three steals in 40 minutes. Senior forward Liz Ferenczy (Coxsackie, NY/Coxsackie-Athens) was voted to the All-Tournament team after contributing 10 rebounds (seven offensive), eight points and two blocks.

Junior forward Kim Schon (Lockport, NY/Lockport) posted a solid double-double with 19 points (6-15 FG, 7-10 FT), 13 rebounds (seven offensive) and four steals in 40 minutes. Senior guard Katie Marcella (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) chalked up 15 points (5-9 FG), including 3-of-4 from three-point range, with six rebounds and five assists.

McNair and junior forward TIFFANY BOYD (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) were named to the All-Tournament Team from NJCU.
McNair, who reached the 20-point plateau for the sixth time in her career, surpassed her previous high of 23 (at City College of New York, January 24, 2005), as she shot 9-of-17 from the field and 6-of-9 from the line with three assists. NJCU is now 4-2 all-time when she reaches 20. She was also named to the Tip-Off All-Tournament Team in 2004.

Boyd had a double-double with 11 points (5-of-11 FG), 11 rebounds (nine defensive), five blocks, five assists and three steals. It was the second consecutive game in which she has swatted five blocks. Boyd moved into second place in school history with 114 blocks, eclipsing Desiree Francois’ total of 112 (1991-95). Boyd needs four more blocks to become NJCU’s all-time leader—a record of 117 held by Alexis Nelson (1995-98).

Junior forward ARNESE GOODMAN (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) chipped in 12 points (6-of-15) for NJCU in 40 minutes. Sophomore center KELLY WILSON (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson County Prep) grabbed seven rebounds and freshman point guard JERICA HAYES (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) hit 2-of-3 from long range for six points.

The Eagles had a decisive 44-31 rebounding margin, including 18-9 on the offensive glass, and shot 43.8 percent from three-point range (7-16). NJCU (25-58, 43.1%) outshot the Eagles from the field (23-61, 37.7%).

NJCU opened the game with an 8-0 lead, but that evaporated and Brockport pulled in front 16-13. The teams traded five leads before the Eagles went to the break ahead 29-24, as Marcella sank back-to-back threes in the final minute of the period.

In the second half, another three by Marcella put Brockport in front by nine, 39-30, at 16:41, as the Eagles hit two threes in 27 seconds. But NJCU answered by nailing three consecutive treys in a span of 54 seconds, as McNair drained a shot, and Hayes drilled two more separated by just 24 seconds, to tie the game at 39-39 at 15:23.

The game would remain tight with six ties and stood at 51-51 with 8:34 left, after a Goodman layup off a feed from Boyd. NJCU uncorked a 7-0 run and pulled ahead 56-51 at 7:17 as Boyd twice seized an offensive rebound and assisted on Goodman jumpers. Although NJCU would go 2:04 without another point, the Knights still led 58-53 at 5:13 as Boyd sank a lay-up from McNair.

However, NJCU’s offense struggled down the stretch, scoring just six points in the final 7:17 of the contest, as the Knights shot 2-of-9 from the field to close the game and 2-of-5 from the line. Meanwhile, Brockport, which outscored NJCU 20-6 in the final 5:51, converted 11 of 13 from the stripe down the stretch.

The Eagles tied the game at 59-59 with 3:50 remaining on a trey by junior guard Christine Princehorn (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta), and took the lead for good at 2:42 on a jumper by Ferenczy. A layup and three-point play by Broadhurst made it 65-61, and another jumper by Ferenczy gave the Eagles a 67-61 margin. Broadhurst hit four freebies down the stretch for a nine-point victory.

NJCU will return to action on Monday, November 27 at 5 p.m. with a non-conference game at John Jay College in New York, NY. Brockport next plays on November 28 at 6 p.m. with a home-game against Fredonia State.
