POTSDAM, N.Y. – SUNY Potsdam junior Kathleen Lewis (Potsdam/Potsdam) scored 17 points and made 10 rebounds, recording her first-ever collegiate double-double, as the Bears defeated SUNYAC archrival Plattsburgh, 63-57, at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
Sophomore Hannah Fairchild (Brushton/Brushton-Moira) added 12 points and six rebounds to the Potsdam effort while freshman Cortney Poirier (Moira/Brushton-Moira) had 10 ponts and five rebounds. Sophomore Maureen Curley (Madrid/Madrid-Waddington) contributed seven rebounds.
Potsdam led 28-23 at halftime and, as part of an 8-0 run, scored six consecutive points to open the second half and grab a 34-23 lead. The Cardinals fought back with a 16-2 run to take a lead of their own, 39-36.
The Bears (8-9, 3-5) answered the Plattsburgh’s run with another 8-0 outburst, jumping ahead 44-39 and taking the lead they would never relinquish.
Freshman Shoshana Harris (Troy/Lansingburgh) led Plattsburgh (4-11, 2-6) with 16 points and six rebounds. Junior Detina Santiago (Connetquot/Dowling College) added 13 points while freshman Jessica Dooley (Troy/Catholic Central) contributed 10 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Vanessa Arthurton (Troy/Troy) led the Cards on the boards with nine rebounds.
Potsdam will play its next game on Saturday, January 27 on Bear Pride Night at Maxcy Hall. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
