Potsdam, NY — Women Slip in SUNYAC Hoops Opener

POTSDAM – Despite a valiant effort the women’s basketball team at SUNY Potsdam fell in Friday night’s SUNYAC opener, 52-62, to the visiting Geneseo Blue Knights. Potsdam now moves to 3-2 (0-1 SUNYAC) while the Blue Knights go to 2-2 (1-1).

The Bears were led by Cortney Poirier (Moira/Brushton-Moira) with 14 points followed by Maureen Curley (Madrid/Madrid-Waddington) with 8. Curley and Hannah Fairchild (Brushton/Brushton-Moira) both had 6 rebounds to lead the Bears on the boards.

Geneseo’s Annie Verdino (Yorktown Hts./New Hyde Park) led all scorers with 17 points. Verdino also topped the Blue Knight rebounders with 6 boards. Merrissa Wilson (Buffalo/Mt. Marcy) followed with 12 points while Katy Irving (Olean/Olean) and Bridget Riley (Syracuse/Westhill) added 10 each.

Potsdam continues home conference action tomorrow afternoon when they welcome SUNY Brockport for a 2 pm contest.
