POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team suffered its second SUNYAC loss of the weekend, losing to Oneonta, 72-37, at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Freshman Cortney Poirier (Moira/Brushton-Moira) led the Bears with 11 points and three steals.
Potsdam (6-7, 1-4) hung tough with the Red Dragons (10-3, 3-2) early on and trailed 13-10 midway through the first half. However, from that moment, Oneonta outscored the home team, 59-27
For the second consecutive game, Potsdam lost the battle at the free throw line, shooting only 9-for-22 (40.9 percent), while Oneonta was 27-for-36 (75.0 percent). The Red Dragons also outrebounded Potsdam, 46-31.
Oneonta senior Melissa Donahue (Niverville/Ichabod Crane) scored 14 points and sophomore Casey Snyder (Colonie/Colonie) contributed 10. Freshman Sara Chrystie (Oxford/Oxford) led the Dragons on the boards with seven rebounds.
The Potsdam women will play their next three games on the road. On Monday, they will visit Skidmore for an 11 a.m. tip-off. Then, the Bears will resume SUNYAC action with a trip to Western New York to take on BuffaloState (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Fredonia (Saturday, 2 p.m.).
