Medaille (2-0) held on to defeat host Buffalo State (1-1), (78-70), to win the championship in the Buffalo State Betty Abgott Invitational today at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. Albany College of Pharmacy (1-1) beat Hilbert (0-2), 65-41, in the consolation game. Medaille opened the game on an 11-1 run and withstood numerous Bengals’ rallies to claim the eight-point victory in today’s championship game. The Mavericks led 43-30 at halftime, but Buffalo State mounted a second-half charge, closing the gap to 73-70 with 48 seconds remaining. Medaille hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch, however, to seal the win. Tournament MVP Amanda Baker (Lyons, NY/Newark) led the Mavs with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Marisa Clark (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Tiffany Collins (Newark, NY/Newark) each scored 15 points, and Amanda Walling (South New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) and Carissa Ferrucci (Hamburg, NY/Immaculata) scored 10 apiece. Darnika Moseley (Liverpool/Liverpool) led Buffalo State with 20 points and seven rebounds. Jacey Brooks (Machias, NY/Franklinville) added 14 points, 11 boards and three blocks. Toya Parks (Brooklyn, NY/MLK) added 17 points and seven steals, and Gina Apa (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) had 11 points and seven rebounds. It would be Amanda Baker claiming Tournament MVP honors for her two day (39) point and (19) rebound effort. The Lady Mavs will put their unbeaten record on the line on Tuesday (11/21) as they host #14 University of Rochester who is coming off a (69-51) win over #1 Scranton. Both teams will head into the game at (2-0). It was Rochester who knocked the Lady Mavs out of the NCAA Tournament last year. That game will be a 6:00pm start in the Sullivan Center.
