Scranton 65, Kean 62

MADISON, NJ — Freshman guard Brittany Whetts (Philadelphia, PA/Bartram) scored 42 points (22-of-27 free throws) and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Neumann to a 73-67 (OT) win over the College at Florham Devils in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 1-6 on the season.

The Devils jumped out to a 7-0 lead behind five points from senior guard Jessie Chalmers (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North). The Knights tied the game, 17-17, with 11:12 left in the first half on a three-point play by Whetts. FDU built a 30-23 lead with 2:49 left in the half with Chalmers and freshman guard Maureen Kehoe (Oradell, NJ/River Dell) each scoring five points. However, Neumann finished the half on a 9-2 run to knot the score at 32-32 going into the locker room. Whetts scored eight of the nine points in the spurt.

The Devils opened up the second half on an 8-1 run, freshman forward Danielle Michlovsky (Wind Gap, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) scored four points, to take a 40-33 lead just 3:24 into the second half. FDU took its biggest lead of the second half, 57-49, on a jumper by freshman forward Courtney Young (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) with 5:57 left in the game. Whetts rallied the Knights though, scoring Neumann’s last eight points to tie the score at 63-63 with 0:20 remaining. Michlovsky had a chance to win the game at the buzzer for FDU, but she missed a jumper in the paint.

Whetts took over in the extra session, scoring all 10 points for the Knights (eight on free throws). The Devils tied the game 67-67 on a jumper by Michlovsky but Whetts made two free throws in three of the Knights’ next five possessions to seal the win.

Chalmers finished had 13 points and 10 rebounds before she left in the game late in the second half with an injury. Sophomore guard Emily Cerankowski (Easton, PA/Notre Dame) finished with a team-high 19 points while Kehoe chipped in 10 points off the bench.

The Devils return to action on Monday, December 11, at home against William Paterson beginning at 6 pm.
