With the win, the Devils improved to 9-4.
FDU jumped out to a 15-8 advantage with 9:04 left to play in the first half behind five points from Rimol. The Devils held the lead for the rest of the half until Kyle O’Connor hit a three pointer for Marymount with 0:03 left to give Marymount a two point halftime lead, 26-24.
The Devils came out in the second half and got their lead right back, going on an 8-0 run keyed by four points from Rimol. Marymount came back to tie the game at 35-35, one of ten ties in the game, with 13:45 remaining. Marymount could never take a lead in the second half however, as the Devils answered every time the score became tied and eventually took a 54-48 lead with 5:36 to play on a three pointer from senior guard Frank Emslie (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan). Marymount didn’t give up, battling back to tie the game, 54-54. Down the stretch, the Devils got a layup from Rimol and seven foul shots from four different players to take a 63-60 lead with 0:09 remaining but the Devils had to hold their breath as Marymount missed a game-tying three at the buzzer.
Senior forward Pierre Schmitt (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) was named Tournament MVP after scoring 10 points and grabbing five rebounds. Sophomore guard Ryan McPherson (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) finished with eight points and was named All-Tournament team. Emslie finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and seven assists while senior guard Brian Dillon (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) chipped in 10 points.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, January 10, 2007, at home against DeSales beginning at 8 pm.
