VC now breaks for Thanksgiving, but returns on Sunday afternoon with an away game at Manhattanville at 2:00 pm.
Vassar used a balanced attack that featured 13 different players in the scoring column. The Brewers were paced by junior forward Lawrence Avitabile (Southington, CT/Southington) who turned in a strong all-around effort finishing with 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five blocks. Avitabile, the Liberty League co-Forward of the Week, was 10-of-16 from the field in 26 minutes of action.
Junior guard Jon Swartz (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench while sophomore guard Brian Butterworth (Hamilton, MA/Hamilton-Wenham added 10 points.
Vassar took command early building a 16-8 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the half on a transition basket by junior forward Kyle Magnus (South Berlington, VT/Rice Memorial). On the strength of a 16-of-29 (.552) shooting effort from the field in the first half, the Brewers stayed in control and their lead would reach 22 on a three-point field goal by senior guard Rob Dauster (North Haven, CT/North Haven) with two minutes left in the half. Vassar would take a 44-23 lead into the break.
On the defensive end, Vassar forced 21 Delaware Valley turnovers and converted them into 21 points. In addition, the Brewers held the Aggies to 32 percent shooting from the field in the first half and 38 percent for the game.
The Brewers, who played their entire roster, got significant bench production, outscoring DelVal 32-9 in that category. Vassar\'s decided height advantage down low contributed to a 40-22 points-in-the-paint advantage. Second chance points were 16-6 in Vassar\'s favor.
Delaware Valley College (1-2) received 22 points, four rebounds and four assists from senior guard Isaiah Pinckney (Philadelphia, PA/Bishop McDevitt). Junior forward Zach Van Dyke (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) for the Aggies who have dropped two in a row after defeating Franklin & Marshall 119-90 in their season opener last weekend.
