Tied at 9-9 midway through the first half, Stevens went on a 10-0 run in a three-minute span to grab a 19-9 lead with 7:07 remaining on the clock. Junior guard Jean Matusiak (Queens, N.Y.) got the Ducks going with a lay-up. Enright added three baskets in the run, and freshman guard/forward Sarah Gehring (Spokane, Wash.) knocked down a jumper as well.
Leading by 10 points (26-16) later in the period, the Ducks put the game away with a 9-0 spurt in the span of 1:15. Enright scored the first six points for Stevens, and Fuller capped the run with a three-pointer from the wing as the lead swelled to 35-16 with 2:35 left in the half. The Ducks led by 18 points (38-20) at the break and were never challenged after intermission.
In addition to her 19 points, Enright pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Fuller, who was eight of 17 from the floor, grabbed eight rebounds. Gehring had a fine game off the bench as she knocked down four of six shots from behind the arc. She finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Matusiak added seven rebounds, seven steals, four points and four assists. Sophomore guard Dani Dudek (Rockaway, N.J.) had seven points, five assists and five rebounds.
The story of the game for Stevens though was the Ducks’ defense, which limited Drew to 23.1 percent (12-for-52) shooting from the floor. Stevens did a fantastic job on the Rangers’ standout senior guards Courtney Cunningham (Garden City, N.Y.) and Melissa Kraft (Staten Island, N.Y.) – holding the lethal combo to 29 points below their combined season scoring average. Kraft, who entered the game as the team’s leading scorer with 20.8 points per game, was one of six from the floor and scored only five points. Cunningham (19.5 points per game) was 3-for-10 from the field for six points. Freshman guard JaQuelia Conley (Columbia, Md.) led the way for the Rangers with eight points.
Drew committed 21 turnovers in the game. The Ducks held a 49-35 rebounding advantage.
Stevens will open Skyline Conference play on Saturday when the Ducks take on SUNY College at Old Westbury. Opening tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. in Old Westbury, N.Y.
