Haverford vs. Swarthmore Feb 21
Melissa Kraft hit a big three with under 1:30 left to secure a season opening win for the Drew Rangers over the Manhattanville Valiants, 74-70, in the opening round of the Rose City Classic. The win gave Drew’s head coach a victory in her first game with the Rangers. Kraft led all scores with 25 while Kim Reznicek led the Valiants with 22.
The Rangers were up by as many as 17 in the first half as sophomore Stephanie Leondis scored nine points in the opening period. Courtney Cunningham added eight points and eight boards to help give drew a 37-25 lead.
The Valiants came out of the break well as they used a 19-9 run after the half to pull within two points. M’Ville tied the game for the first time with 10:51 left in the game. The game was tied again at 65-65 with just over three minutes remaining when the Rangers regained control. First-year Allison Hartnett scored on a lay-up after a well worked inbound play and Melissa Kraft drilled long range three to put the Rangers up by five. Kim Reznicek hit a three for Manhattanville before Kraft coolly drained a pair of free throws. It was just a trade of free throws between Reznicek and Cunningham after that as Drew pulled out the four point victory.
Kraft finished the game with 25 points, 18 of which came in the second half. Cunningham scored 17 and added 15 boards and four assists. Leondis posted 14 points and four boards.
The Rangers will face a tough Elmira squad tomorrow at 3 pm in the Rose City Classic Championship game. Elmira defeated Emerson 72-44 in the first game of the afternoon.
