Wilkes-Barre, PA — Widener University raced out to a 16-point halftime lead and held off an early second half Wilkes University rally to post an 82-68 non-conference women’s basketball win on Saturday afternoon in the Marts Center. The win improved the Pride to 6-7 overall, while Wilkes saw their record fall to 5-7 overall.

Wilkes held a 12-11 lead with 15:13 remaining in the opening half following a basket by Karyn Perestam. The Pride would then embark on an 8-0 run that gave them the lead for good. Beth Dessart Mager started the spree with a lay-up to give Widener a 13-12 advantage. Stephanie Bixby then cashed in two free throws and a jumper to extend the lead to 17-12. Becky Tyler capped the run with a basket inside that provided her team with a 19-12 lead with 12:52 showing on the clock.

Wilkes closed to within five, 22-17, on a pair of Emilee Strubeck free throws at the 9:37 mark. But, that is as close as the Lady Colonels would get during the remainder of the first half as Widener methodically began to pull away. The Pride would take their biggest lead of the half, 44-26, on a lay-up by Megan Sipple just 1:44 before intermission. Wilkes would then get a basket by Perestam to with seven ticks left in the period to cut the gap to 44-28 at intermission.

The Lady Colonels would open the second half with a 14-2 run to get back to within four points. Lacey Andresen knocked down a three-pointer to open the second period scoring for Wilkes. After Kelley Guarrera scored on a drive for Widener, Randi Corbo cashed in a three-pointer for the Lady Colonels to cut the Pride’s lead to 46-34.

Andresen connected on back-to-back trifectas to move Wilkes within 46-40 with 16:59 left. Kelly Patchell then scored inside for the Lady Colonels to make it a 46-42 contest with 16:19 left.

Widener held a 52-47 lead with 13:37 left before rattling off 11 straight points to open up a double-figure lead they would never relinquish. Rayne Reber started the scoring with a three-pointer and Becky Tyler converted a traditional three-point play to up the Pride’s lead to 58-47. After Dessart hit one-of-two from the charity stripe, Barbara Fleming was fouled and hit two free throws to push the lead to 61-47. A fast break lay-up by Dessart capped the run and gave Widener a 63-47 lead with 10:45 left. Wilkes would not get any closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Dessart had a game-high 23 points and three assists to lead the way for Widener. Tyler chipped in with 17 points and six rebounds. Sipple finished with 15 points, six boards, four assists and four steals.

Andresen had 20 points to pace three Wilkes players in twin digits. Corbo added 12 points and three assists, while Perestam finished with a double-double after scoring 10 points and snagging 10 rebounds.
