ASHLAND, VA — The Randolph-Macon College men’s basketball team used a 49 point second half that included the Yellow Jackets shooting 76.5 (14-of-17) percent from the field to overcome a half-time deficit and top ODAC rival Roanoke College 67-62 on Sunday afternoon in Ashland.

R-MC’s (4-1 / 2-0 ODAC) Stephen Sutherland scored 14 second-half points to lift the Yellow Jackets to the victory. Sutherland was joined by Justin Short who posted a game-high 17 points on the strength of a 13-of-13 performance at the charity stripe, while Jeremy Dixon added 14 points of his own and Phil Hawley chipped in with 10.

The Maroons (1-3 / 0-2 ODAC) were led by A.J. Dowell, who connected on six-of-nine shots for a total of 15 points on the afternoon. Tee Jackson added 11 points for RC in a losing effort.

RC held the lead the entire first-half and took an eight point advantage into the locker room when Jackson nailed a three-point field goal with the 1:32 left in the opening period to give the Maroons a 26-18 lead. R-MC finished the first stanza going just 6-30 (20.0%) from the field, including one-of-nine from beyond the arc.

Roanoke extended its lead to 10 points at 28-18 when Curtis Peery converted a lay up with 19:42 to play in the game.

The Yellow Jackets stayed within striking distance and took their first lead of the game when Sutherland knocked down a three-pointer in transition to give Randolph-Macon a 43-42 edge with 12:03 to play.

The teams exchanged baskets with four lead changes and four ties over the next 11:30. With the score 62-60 in favor of RC with 30 seconds remaining, Dixon converted a lay up, drew a foul and sunk the ensuing free-throw to put R-MC ahead for good at 63-62.

Roanoke had a chance to take the lead on the ensuing possession but Keith Carter’s jumper fell short, the ball was corralled by Hawley and Short converted on a pair of free-throws to put R-MC up 65-62.

The Maroons then turned the ball over in the back court, the ball was collected by Short and he hit two more free-throws to preserve the win for the Yellow Jackets.

Randolph-Macon will be back in action when it travels to Lynchburg College on Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. Roanoke will host Emory and Henry on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
