Wilkes-Barre, PA — Lacey Andresen popped in a game-high 23 points to lead Wilkes University to a 73-64 non-conference women’s basketball win over local rival Marywood University on Tuesday night in the Marts Center. The Lady Colonels won their home opener to improve to 2-1, while the Pacers saw their record fall to 1-2.

The majority of the first half was close with the Pacers taking an 18-16 lead on a basket by Amanda Lass with 4:20 left in the stanza. However, that is the last time that Marywood would hold the lead in the game.

Khadija Bates hit two free throws, Corbo scored on a drive and Andresen cashed in a jumper to extend the Wilkes lead to 27-20 with 1:28 showing on the clock. Ashley Makarczyk would follow with a three-pointer for the Lady Colonels to make it 30-20. Eileen Dopart’s two free throws with 19 seconds left pulled Marywood to within 30-22 at intermission.

Wilkes never lost the lead, although the Pacers would make several runs during the final 20 minutes. They would close to within two points on three occasions during the period, including 40-38 on a DeVito basket with 12:20 left.

Andresen would help the Lady Colonels extend the lead back to nine points, 49-40 with 9:09 left. She canned a jumper and a three-pointer on consecutive possessions to make it 45-38. After another Lass field goal, Andresen converted inside to up the lead to 47-40. A Makarczyk lay-up would provide Wilkes with the nine-point advantage.

Wilkes would build the lead to a game-high 13 points on a pair of Corbo free throws that made it 63-50 with 4:35 left. But, DeVito hit three three-pointers during a 9-2 Marywood run that cut the lead to 65-59 with 2:26 left.

The Lady Colonels put the game away for good by scoring eight of the next ten points. Katie Cappelloni hit a free throw and Karyn Perestam scored inside to make it 68-59 at the 1:35 mark. After Rosy Diaz scored for Marywood, Chelsey Gosse scored on a fast break and Andresen cashed in another three-pointer with 12 seconds left to give Wilkes a 73-61 lead.
