Wilkes-Barre, PA — Kirby Lutz tossed in a game-high 23 points, including the 1,000th of her collegiate career, to lead DeSales University to a 77-46 win over Wilkes University in a Freedom Conference women’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon in the Marts Center.

The Bulldogs improved to 11-3 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play with a 4-0 mark. Wilkes sees their overall record slide to 5-9 and their conference record dip to 1-3.

LeighAnn Burke scored five points and Lutz added four tallies in the opening 7:30 to stake DeSales to a 14-4 lead. Later in the stanza the Lady Colonels Ashley Makarczyk knocked down a three-pointer to pull her team within 18-9 with 10:40 showing on the clock.

DeSales would then embark on an 11-0 run that extended their lead to double-figures for good. Kaila Wiand started the run with a lay-up following a steal by Lindsey Sykes that gave her team a 20-9 edge. Lutz then reached the 1,000 point plateau when she converted a traditional three-point play with 9:58 left to up the DeSales lead to 23-9. Jenna Stampf, Caitlin Miller and Lutz would tack on a field goal each to extend the lead to 29-9 with 8:40 left in the half.

The Bulldogs would continue to build the lead and took a 41-16 advantage on a basket by Kelly Magrann with 2:15 showing on the clock. They would keep that lead and headed into halftime with a 46-21 lead.

Wilkes was unable to put a dent into the DeSales lead during the final 20 minutes, getting as close as 23 points on two occasions. The Bulldogs enjoyed their biggest advantage, 68-34, on a jumper by Amanda Kuperavage with 9:15 left, before settling for the 31-point win.

Lutz went 7-of-14 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line to take game-high honors. She also had seven rebounds. Kuperavage was the only other DeSales player in double-figures with 11 tallies.

Wilkes was paced by the play of Katie Cappelloni, who had 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Randi Corbo chipped in with nine points and five assists.
