Wilkes-Barre, PA — The Wilkes University women’s basketball team ended their first semester of play with a 70-61 non-conference win over Arcadia University on Tuesday night in the Marts Center. The win improved the Lady Colonels to 5-5, while the Knights slipped to 2-6 overall.

Arcadia would use a 13-2 run early in the first half to take a 17-7 lead. Ashley Heakins had six points during the spurt to lead the Knights, including a field goal with 9:34 left in the half that gave them their 10-point lead.

Wilkes would chip away at the lead before taking their first advantage since early in the contest, 26-25, on a lay-up by Kelly Patchell with 47 seconds remaining in the stanza. After Rachael Dauscher put the Knights back on top with two free throws, Khadija Bates gave the Lady Colonels a 28-27 halftime lead with two free throws with six seconds left in the period.

Katie Lynch, Stephanie Bates and Caitlin Spark scored two points each during an opening 6-0 spurt to the second half that gave Arcadia 33-28 lead. The Knights built their biggest lead of the half 41-34, on a pair of free throws by Spark with 14:22 left.

However, Wilkes would battle back with seven unanswered points to tie the game at 41-41 on a bucket by Karyn Perestam with 12:21 showing on the clock. After two more ties and three lead changes Wilkes finally took the lead for good on a Perestam basket with 9:16 left that gave the Lady Colonels a 49-47 edge.

Clinging to a 54-53 lead with less than seven minutes left, Wilkes put together a 10-0 run that sealed the win. Kelly Patchell had four points during the outburst, including a field goal with 2:56 left that put the Lady Colonels on top 64-53.
