Occidental 83, Swarthmore 52

ALPINE, Tx. — ALPINE, Tx.- NAIA powerhouse Lubbock Christian University handed the Sul Ross Lady Lobos a 70-46 season opening loss Tuesday evening at the Gallego Center.

Sully shot an even 34 percent from the field in Tuesday’s effort while converting 12 of 18 from the foul line, good for 66.7 percent. Lubbock Christian had the edge at the boards out rebounding Sul Ross 46-28.

Janice Mitchell sported a team high 12 points in the loss while senior Celesta Perkins tallied 8 rebounds.

LCU’s Ashley Hunter totaled a game high 15 points while Kim Lloyd and Brandi Randli led at the boards with 8 rebounds each.

The Lady Lobos tied the contest twice early in the opening period. Sul Ross took a two-point lead as Perkins dropped a bucket to give Sully a 6-4 advantage with 17:34 left in the first half.

It would be the last time the Lady Lobos would lead for the game as the Lady Chaps commenced on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes of play. Both teams went to the break with LCU leading 41-23.

Lubbock Christian then broke out to an 8-1 sprint to start the second half. Sully never pulled within less than 17 points the remainder of the outing.

The Lady Lobos, 0-1 on the season, will face NCAA Division II UTPB in a 1:00 p.m. tip at the Gallego Center on Saturday.
