BOSTON — Senior swingman Tony Barros (Dorchester, MA) poured in a school-record 46 points to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men’s basketball team over visiting Colby-Sawyer College in double-overtime, 102-100, in the consolation game of the 22nd Annual Harbor Invitational today at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMass Boston campus. The Beacons improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Chargers fall to 1-3.

UMass Boston owned a 100-97 lead following a lay-up by sophomore center Rodney Bennett (Mattapan, MA) with 1:55 left to play in the second overtime, but Nate Truncellito drilled a three-pointer for Colby-Sawyer with 70 seconds remaining to knot the score at the century mark. Following a Beacons’ turnover and then an offensive foul on the Chargers with 20 seconds to go, Barros sank a jumper with just two seconds left in the game to give UMass Boston the eventual win.

The Chargers owned a 59-41 advantage with 16:30 showing in the second half and maintained a 75-59 lead with 8:41 on the second half clock, before the Beacons went on a 15-2 run, fueled by a pair of three-pointers from Barros, to pull them to within 77-74 with 4:23 remaining in the second stanza. Colby-Sawyer regained its composure and scored seven unanswered points to extend its led to 84-74 with 2:41 left in regulation, but UMass Boston scored the next seven points to pull to within three at 84-81 with 1:47 to play, where the score would remain for almost the rest of the half. The Beacons called a timeout with eight ticks remaining in the second half and after Barros missed a three-pointer with four seconds left, Bennett grabbed the board, found an open Amigo Paniagua (Santiago, DR), who buried a three-pointer with no time remaining on the clock to send the contest into overtime.

Andrew Tracy converted a lay-up with 33 seconds to go in the first overtime to give Colby-Sawyer a 95-93 margin, but freshman guard Aaron Jones (Boston, MA) hit a running jumper in the lane to tie the score at 95-all for UMass Boston with seven seconds remaining, thus sending the marathon to a second extra session.

The Beacons owned a 15-14 edge with 14:01 showing in the first half, but the Chargers went on a torrid 13-point run to take a 27-15 advantage with 10:07 left in the first half. UMass Boston would cut the deficit to seven and Colby-Sawyer led by as many as 13 for the remainder of the half, before going into the break with a 47-36 lead.

Barros eclipsed the former single-game scoring mark of 45, held by former guard Frankie Patten in a game vs. Plymouth State University on February 10, 2001. Barros finished 14-27 from the field, including nine three-pointers to extend his school-record to 48 straight games with at least one trifecta, and added eight rebounds, four steals, a pair of blocks and an assist, while committing just one turnover in 46 minutes of action and was named to the All-Tournament team for the second straight year for the Beacons. Paniagua netted 26 points in addition to eight rebounds, four steals, four assists and two blocks, while Bennett posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, while adding four assists and a block.

Duncan Szeliga led the Chargers with 24 points and added two rebounds, three steals an assist and a steal, while Truncellito scored 20 points, grabbed six boards and dished for five assists and was named the John “Bill” Shay Award for his sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Jon Chaloux was selected to the All-Tournament team after contributing with 16 points, eight rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot.

UMass Boston will be in action again when it travels to nearby Emerson College on Tuesday, November 28 at 7:00 p.m., while Colby-Sawyer takes on Plymouth State on November 28 at 7:30 p.m.
