Carrey finished with 13 points for the Rams (9-11, 3-5 MASCAC), who also got 23 points from senior forward Derek Wigman (Pembroke, MA) including his 1,000 career point late in the first half.
After a back and forth opening stanza, Bridgewater led 53-46 at halftime. The Rams closed in on Bridgewater’s lead, tying the game at 57-57 four minutes into the second half. The Bears started to pull away, finding themselves up by 19 points with a score of 85-66. The Rams, however outscored Bridgewater 25-5 and took a 91-90 lead with 2:21 left in the ballgame.
Bridgewater picked up a free throw with 1:56 left to knot the game at 92-92. Framingham got basket to take a 94-92 lead. Junior guard Tom Cuddihy (Scituate, MA) drilled a crucial three-pointer from the top of the key to recapture the lead for Bridgewater, 95-94 with 28 seconds left to go. That set the state for Carey’s heroics.
Framingham used a timeout with 19 seconds on the clock, and took the floor with one possession to win the game. Dribble penetration by sophomore forward Josue Almodovar (Holyoke, MA) opened up a three-point look for Bill Carey on the wing, and he calmly sank the game-winner with 5 seconds on the clock.
The Rams stayed alive throughout the contest by shooting the three-point shot, and finished with 15-35 from downtown on 43% shooting.
Cuddihy finished with 16 points and 4 assists on the afternoon. Cuddihy’s 16 points this afternoon puts him at 979 total points for his career, only 21 points away from the 1,000 mark. Despite the loss, Bears’ senior guard K.C. Grandfield (Dartmouth, MA) managed set an all-time Bridgewater State College record for most assists in a game with 17. The previous record was 13 which was held by three individuals, most recently by Brian Adamczyk in 2004. Senior guard Adam Rose (Harwich, MA) scored a team-high 23 points, and senior center Derek Thompson (Hyannis, MA) wasn’t far behind with 21 points and 4 rebounds.
Almodovar finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals. Junior guard Michael Costa (Holbrook, MA) chipped in with 12 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals.
The MASCAC schedule resumes for the BSC next Tuesday night as the Bears travel to MCLA to take on the Trailblazers at 5:30. Framingham is also back in action on Tuesday as the Rams host Worcester State at 5:30.
