NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Christopher Newport\'s men\'s basketball team defeated a nationally ranked team for the first time since the 2000-2001 season as the Captains knocked off No. 12 Randolph-Macon Tuesday night in the Freeman Center by a score of 84-77.

The last win over a nationally ranked foe came against No. 19 St. John\'s (MN) in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament back on March 9, 2001.

The Yellow Jackets led by as many as eight points in the second half when Justin Short nailed a 3-pointer with 11:45 left in the game to put RMC up 57-49.

CNU then went on a 24-13 run to take the lead with 3:22 left in the game on Theo Baker\'s 3-pointer from the left wing. Baker took a long feed from Donta Selden who found Baker wide open for the bucket. CNU lead 73-70.

The Captains would increase their lead to as many as eight, 79-71 with 1:45 left. A tip-in by the Jackets Jeremy Dixon with 1:30 left cut the lead to six and on the ensuing possession, Selden\'s in-bounds pass after a time out near mid-court, was stolen by Short who was fouled. Short made both free throws to cut the lead to four, 79-75 with 1:17 left.

CNU then tried a long outlet pass but RMC intercepted the toss. The Jackets took three 3-pointers and failed to connect on all three. The Jackets would foul down the stretch, but the Captains finished 5-of-7 from the free throw line.

The Jackets got off to a slow start to begin the game, missing on their first 11 shots before Short\'s lay-up with 14:42 remaining cut the CNU lead to six, 10-4. The Captains would lead by as many as 10, twice, in the first half. The final time came with 10:04 to go as they lead 21-11.

RMC countered with a 15-3 run over the next five minutes to take the lead, 26-22, with 5:23 to play in the opening half. The Jackets would lead by three at the break, 38-35, after Selden\'s 3-pointer was off with three seconds to go; Ron Spears was fouled on the way up after he grabbed the rebound. Spears made 1-of-2 from the line to provide the halftime margin.

It was a tale of two halves shooting for both squads. RMC shot 35% from the field in the first half and 20% from behind the arc. In the second, the Jackets finished 15-of-32 (47%) from the floor, but just 5-of-14 (36%) from long range and only 4-of-7 from the line.

The Captains finished the second half 18-of-31 (58%) from the floor after shooting just 38% from the field in the first half. CNU was also 4-of-7 (57%) from behind the arc in the second stanza after hitting just 4-of-12 in the first half.

For the game, the Jackets shot 28-of-69 (41%) from the floor, 8-of-29 (28%) from long range and 13-of-16 (81%) from the charity stripe. Christopher Newport finished 31-of-65 (48%) from the field, 8-of-19 (42%) from behind the arc and 14-of-20 (70%) from the line.

Jeremy Dixon paced Randolph-Macon as one of four players in double figures. Dixon finished with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 10 rebounds. Short added 14 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals. David Carlson added 12 points and a game-high 13 boards while Adam Krovic finished with 10 points.

The USA South\'s Player of the Week, Davon Barton, finished with his third double-double in a row. The sophomore guard was 9-of-17 from the field, including 1-of-4 from long range and 4-of-5 from the line to finish with a game-high 23 points. He also had 11 assists. Selden finished with 19 points and 4-of-9 from downtown. He also had six rebounds and three assists. Mark Blasingame contributed a double-double as well, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with six swats. Baker finished with 11 points off the bench and was 4-of-6 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from long range.

For CNU, it\'s the second win in as many meetings. The Captains won in Ashland back on Dec. 12, 2004 when CNU was victorious, 69-66.

Randolph-Macon falls to 2-1 on the year while the Captains improve to 3-2. CNU returns to action Saturday as they host Castleton St. (VT) at 7:30 pm. The Jackets also return to action Saturday as they host Washington & Lee in their ODAC opener beginning at 2 pm.
