The Emory women’s basketball team used a solid defensive effort Sunday afternoon in recording a 69-52 victory over Meredith College. The win raised Emory’s record to 2-0 while the Angels fell to 0-2. The game was played at the Woodruff PE Center on the Emory campus.
The Eagles forced Meredith into 16 first-half turnovers and posted a 28-21 edge on the boards in claiming a 45-25 halftime lead. Emory held the visitors to just 31 percent from the (9-of-29) floor in the first 20 minutes of action while taking advantage of its superior depth to post a 29-2 margin in bench points.
Emory built its advantage to 24 points in the early stages of the second half before a Meredith rally pulled it to within 13 points with 11:52 remaining. However, the Eagles responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take control the contest again, 63-42, with 7:55 left.
Sophomore Lora Turner was the lone Emory player to score in double figures and finished with 10 points. The Eagles spread the scoring around with 13 of the 16 players who saw action finding their way into the scoring column. Sophomores Sarah Richards and Erica Kaplan shared for the team in rebounding with seven boards.
“Our team is very deep this year,” Emory Head Coach Christy Thomaskutty said following the game. “We have the luxury of playing more players, something we have not had in the last couple of years.”
While Meredith ended the game outshooting the Eagles from the floor (34.0% vs. 32.9%), Emory parlayed 35 Meredith turnovers into a 30-16 advantage in the points off turnovers category. The Eagles also showed a 42-9 bulge in bench points.
Emory’s next action takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at Piedmont College with action slated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
