Mary Washington 90, St. Mary's (Md.) 79

New York, NY — Godfrey Mascall (Brooklyn, NY/ Paul Roberson) dished out a career-high 14 assists and picked up three steals for the John Jay men’s basketball team as the Bloodhounds defeated New York City College of Technology (NYCCT) 75-72 at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.
The win improves John Jay to 4-14 (3-4 CUNYAC), while NYCCT is now 3-13 (2-5 CUNYAC).
Mascall’s passing led to easy baskets for John Jay as the Bloodhounds shot 52 percent (30-for-58) for the game, including 63 percent (15-for-24) in the second half.
Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY/ Alfred E Smith) recorded a team-high 17 points (7-for-10) for the Bloodhounds, while Alex Valerio (Flushing, NY/ Francis Lewis) added 14 off the bench. Emilio Gomez (Moca, Dominican Republic/ William H Taft) added 13 points in the win.
Jamaal Hall (Brooklyn, NY/ Benjamin Banneker) paced NYCCT with 28 points in the contest.
In a first half that saw nine lead changes, five ties, and no team lead by more than five, the Bloodhounds trailed by two at the break (34-32).
Both teams continued sparring in the second half, and with the score deadlocked at 47 with 14:24 to go, John Jay went on a 12-5 run to take a 59-52 lead at the 11:18 mark, and the Bloodhounds would never trail again.
John Jay would lead by as much as nine (70-61) on a three-point field goal by Kelvin Luna (Corona, NY/ Flushing) with 7:20 remaining.
But the visiting Yellow Jackets managed to chip away at the lead and went on an 11-3 run, capped by a Hall three pointer, to cut the John Jay lead to one (73-72) with 2:02 remaining.
But it would be as close as NYCCT would get as neither team would score again until the final seconds, when Valerio drilled a jumper in the paint with 20 seconds remaining to give the Bloodhounds the three point lead.
In their final possession Hall would come up short on a pair of three point attempts as John Jay holds on for the win.
The Bloodhounds will return to action on Fri. Jan. 19 against York College, 7 p.m. at the Doghouse.
