Chicago 86, Carnegie Mellon 82

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Junior guard Tiffany Menhorn (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) totaled 16 points, six rebounds and four assists to power Pitt-Greensburg past Washington & Jefferson, 67-61, in women’s basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Henry Memorial Center.

The Presidents (6-6), who did not have a double-digit scorer for the second-straight game, fell behind early, but rallied to claim a 22-18 advantage at the 6:20 mark after junior center Sarah Hunt’s (Penfield, N.Y./Rochester Schroeder) lay-up.

Junior guard Juliet Sargent (Washington, Pa./Washington) made it a six-point lead 27 seconds later, but the Bobcats (5-5) trimmed the deficit to 29-27 at halftime.

Freshman point guard Kennan Killeen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) canned a jumper on the first possession of the second half, but Pitt-Greensburg rolled off 19 of the next 21 points to assume a 46-33 lead with 14:28 remaining. Six different Bobcats scored points during the run.

The Presidents regrouped with a 19-6 stretch over the next eight minutes to tie the game, 52-52, with 6:17 left on the clock. Sophomore reserve guard Lindsey Hyre (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) knocked down a pair of triples during the run, while Hunt added two baskets.

The Bobcats took control from that point; however, holding W&J scoreless over a four-minute period. Junior guard Nicole Beggs (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) drilled a three-pointer at the 3:28 mark for a 60-54 advantage and UPG iced the game from the free throw line.

Freshman forward Kelsey Wilcox (Dubois, Pa./Dubois) added 15 points and seven boards for the Bobcats, while freshman guard Julie Ehrman (Butler, Pa./Butler) and sophomore guard Nicole Reiser (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) both netted 10 points. UPG shot 39 percent (22-of-56) and scored 22 points off 15 W&J turnovers.

Hunt paced the W&J effort with nine points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Sophomore forward Emily Hays (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) added nine points, while freshman forward Maggie Gibson (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) grabbed 15 rebounds. Killeen dished out seven assists to go with her five points.

W&J held a 47-33 rebounding advantage, but was only able to connect on 37 percent (25-of-68) of its attempts.

The Presidents return to PAC play on Saturday when hosting Saint Vincent at 2:00 pm in Washington.
