OLIVET, Mich. — With an 87-63 win over Olivet, the Calvin women’s basketball team remained undefeated in the MIAA play to close out the first half of the league schedule. The win was the 11th straight for the Knights, who improved to 14-1 overall this season and 8-0 in the MIAA. The game was the first half of a double-header at Olivet as the Calvin men’s basketball team played the night-cap against the Comets.

Coming off of a major upset of Hope College last Saturday, Calvin had to deal with a Comets team that came into the game in third place in the MIAA. The Knights did not allow a let-down as they led from the outset of the contest. Junior Nikki Zimmerman (Traverse City) nailed a three-pointer on the first possession and Calvin moved out in front 11-2 early over the Comets. Olivet cut the lead to 20-16 with just over seven minutes left but Calvin was able to run-off an 8-2 run that stretched the lead to eleven with four minutes remaining in the half. Calvin had a lead of 37-23 at the half. Sophomore Marcia Harris collected 14 points to go with seven rebounds in the first half as she dominated inside.

The second half started well for the Knights as they scored eight of the first ten points. Calvin led by 21 points when Zimmerman nailed another three-pointer six and a half minutes into the second half. A lay-up by Harris with less than seven minutes remaining pushed Calvin’s lead to over thirty at 68-37. Calvin coasted the rest of the way to claim its sixth road victory of the season. Olivet dropped to 7-8 on the season and 4-4 in the MIAA.

Senior Lisa Winkle recorded her 38th collegiate double-double by collecting 14 points and 11 rebounds. Winkle was second in scoring on the team behind Harris who scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Zimmerman was also in double figures for scoring with 12 points to go with six rebounds and freshman Brooke Van Eck scored a career high 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Calvin shot well from the field at 49.2 percent while scoring a season high in points. The Knights held the Comets to 41.4 percent shooting from the field. Calvin out-rebounded Olivet 41-33 and the Knights had a positive assist to turnover margin as they dished out 18 assists and limited their turnovers to a season low of only ten.

Calvin will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Kalamazoo to face the Hornets to begin the second half of the league schedule. Game time is 3pm and will be broadcast via real audio from the Calvin Sports Information website.
