GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Calvin opened its MIAA campaign with an impressive victory over visiting Kalamazoo Wednesday night, handing the Hornets an 86-58 defeat.

Ranked 15th in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, Calvin (5-1 overall, 1-0 MIAA) scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back.

Behind 46.9 percent field goal shooting, Calvin was able to build a 40-27 halftime lead. The Knights then shot 54.1 percent in the second half and used a 16-3 run in the opening five minutes to put the game away.

Senior center Lisa Winkle led the Calvin attack with 18 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots, notching her 33rd collegiate double-double. Winkle keyed a Calvin defense that blocked 11 shots, forced 27 turnovers and limited the Hornets to 30.6 percent field goal shooting. Calvin also collected 17 steals led by junior Rachael Willett who picked up four steals.

Winkle was one of four Calvin players to reach double digits in scoring as sophomore forward Marcia Harris had 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting while junior guard Nikki Zimmerman scored a career-high 12 points. Sophomore guard Sarah Partridge also came off the bench to provide a career-high 11 points. Junior point guard Lindsey Peuler and Willett added nine points apiece.

Kalamazoo (1-5 overall, 0-1 MIAA) was led in defeat by Kelsea Howell with 18 points while Briana Hendrix had 11 points.

Calvin will now break for first semester exams and return to the court on December 16 when it hosts Alma at 3:00 p.m. in an MIAA contest.
