YORK, Pa. — The York College men’s basketball team picked up their first win at the new Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center as the green and white recorded a 72-70 victory over The York College men’s basketball team picked up their first win at the new Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center as the green and white recorded a 72-70 victory over visiting Albright College on Sunday night in York. The Spartans improve to 2-1 overall while the Lions fall to 2-2 including 0-2 against Capital Athletic Conference teams this year.

The Lions asserted themselves early as they had the better of the action over the first 12 minutes of the game. They led by as many as eight twice with the second time coming at 25-17 with 8:35 remaining in the half. The Spartans put together a 13-2 run to take a 30-27 lead, their first lead since the third minute of the game. Albright regained the lead at 37-36 but York hit a trio of free throws in the final 1:16 of the half to take a 39-37 lead at the break.

York pushed its halftime lead to six twice before the Lions tied the game at 49. York responded with six straight points of their own to take a 55-49 lead with 11:53 remaining in the game. That would be the largest lead for either team the rest of the way.

The remaining ten minutes of the game featured three ties and four lead changes. Albright looked like they had gained the momentum when Matt Kieselowsky drained a three with 3:37 left, giving the Lions a 69-64 advantage. York got a Chad McGowan lay up to trim the lead to 69-66. Kyle Brudvig split a pair of free throws to up the Spartan deficit to 70-66. A McGowan three pointer followed by a clutch Brad Zerfing jumper gave the hosts a 71-70 lead with 1:46 left. Kieselowsky missed a pair of free throws with 1:36 left as the free throw shooting down the stretch for both teams was not very good. McGowan went to the line with 24 seconds left but missed both attempts as the Spartans maintained the one point lead. Albright turned the ball over with 13 seconds left and the Lions fouled Nate Lankford. Lankford split the pair and after a timeout, Kieselowsky’s game winning three point attempt caromed off the rim as the horn sounded, giving York the win.

McGowan led all scorers as the junior poured in 28 points while he recorded his second double-double with 10 rebounds. He also had three steals and a blocked shot in 30 minutes of action. McGowan was 10-of-22 from the floor including 2-of-2 from distance. Lankford was the second Spartan in double figures with 10 points while he also had four assists, four rebounds, and a steal. Freshman Nick Brady added nine points, six rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

Brudvig led the Lions with 19 points while he also chipped in with four boards. Albert Medoro notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Tom Murphy was the third Lion in double figures with 11 points. Kieselowsky had eight points, eight assists, and two boards for the Lions.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 42.6% (26-for-61) from the floor while the Lions converted 50.9% (29-for-57) from the field. York was accurate from three as they nailed 7-of-16 (43.8%) while Albright was just 3-for-14 (21.4%). The Spartans struggled from the charity stripe again as they made 25 trips to the line, making just 13 for a 52% success rate.

York got 18 second chance points to nine for Albright while the Lions held a 38-30 edge in points in the paint. Albright out-rebounded York 37-34 for the game.

The Spartans open their 2006-07 Capital Athletic Conference schedule on Wednesday night as they travel to Goucher College to face the Gophers. Tip time from Towson is set for 8:00 pm.
