In the tournament championship game, Hood College defeated McDaniel College 88-72.
Lebanon Valley (1-1) led 52-50 before Mike Hern canned a three-pointer from the left wing with 47 seconds remaining. After a Lebanon Valley turnover, the Dutchmen put Donald Reid on the foul line with 37 seconds remaining, and he missed both shots. Curran pulled down the rebound, and he misfired on a jumper with 25 ticks showing. But senior forward Brian Wolensky (Rosemont, Pa./Radnor) grabbed the offensive rebound before LVC called timeout.
Making an offensive move, Curran was fouled in the air with eight seconds left, and he made the first of two free throws. Garan Dickson pulled down the rebound on the miss, and Hern attempted a potential game-winning lay-up just before the buzzer. But sophomore guard Kyle Enoch was there to swat away the shot for his first career block, sending the game to overtime.
The Dutchmen never trailed in the extra session, outscoring Montclair State 13-7. After a Charles Miller free throw tied the game 54-54 with 4:00 on the clock, Lebanon Valley scored six unanswered points. A pair of Curran jumpers followed by a pair of Hunter Bretschneider free throws with 58 seconds left made it 60-54, and Montclair State was unable to get closer than four down the stretch.
The Red Hawks missed their first five field goals of overtime during LVC’s decisive 6-0 run.
Hern finished with 19 points to lead Montclair State (0-2).
Lebanon Valley had three other players reach double figures in scoring. Bretschneider scored 15 points, going 4-of-6 from the field and 6-for-6 at the line, while sophomore guard Dan Hodge shot 6-for-10, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, for 15 points of his own. Enoch added 12 points to go with a game- and career-high eight rebounds. Junior center Luke Foster blocked four shots for the Dutchmen.
Jonathan Arthur posted 14 points and seven rebounds for MSU while Miller had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Lebanon Valley improved to 2-0 in overtime games in the LVC Gymnasium. The only other men\'s overtime contest in the four-year-old facility occured on Jan. 9, 2005, when LVC defeated New Jersey City 75-73 in the Marquette championship game.
The Dutchmen led by as much as 10 late in the first half, and a Hodge lay-up with six seconds left made it a 27-18 game at halftime.
A Bretschneider lay-up with 17:33 remaining made it 33-23, but that’s when the Red Hawks embarked on a 10-0 run to tie the game with 15:40 to go following a Miller lay-up. Montclair State came all the way back to take the lead (42-41) with 12:05 left after an Arthur lay-up, and a Hern trey made it 45-43 in favor of the Hawks with 9:38 remaining. But Enoch answered with a three-pointer 21 seconds later, giving the Dutchmen the lead they would not relinquish until Hern’s late three-pointer.
Curran and Arthur were named to the all-tournament team, as were Ryan Junghans of Hood, Ryan Brandenburg of McDaniel, and Brian Finch of McDaniel. Sean Robine of Hood was named the tournament MVP.
