ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — And then there was one. Elizabethtown College is now one win away from becoming just the third NCAA women’s basketball program ever, as well as the first NCAA Division III women’s basketball program ever, to reach the 900 all-time win plateau. The Blue Jays blew out Briarcliffe College 84-34 Friday night on the opening day of the 2006 R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic Tournament to seal victory number 899. Adding to the celebratory atmosphere Friday night, Elizabethtown junior Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Co.) became the 22nd Blue Jay women’s basketball player to score her 1,000th career point. In the Blue Jay Classic’s other first round game, Newport News Apprentice School downed Penn State-Harrisburg 103-62. As a result, Briarcliffe (4-3) and Penn State-Harrisburg (3-4) will face off in the tournament’s consolation game at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9, while Elizabethtown (6-2) will face Newport News Apprentice (5-2) at 3:00 p.m. Saturday in the Blue Jays’ attempt to earn both the tournament championship and the program’s 900th all-time victory.

Walton scored 33 points against Briarcliffe to bring her career total to 1,004 and move into 21st place on Elizabethtown’s all-time scoring list. She also had four steals, tying for the team lead, and six rebounds. Walton went 2-for-2 from the free throw line, brining her total of consecutive free throws made to 42.
