Heather Thompson led McDaniel (2-1) with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Katy Powell added 19 points for the Green Terror, who were perfect from the floor (4-for-4) while shooting 8-for-12 from the foul line in overtime.
Junior guard Jenna Gambino posted 12 points and four assists for Lebanon Valley (1-2).
It was only the second women’s basketball game to go to overtime in the LVC Gymnasium and the first since the Dutchmen defeated York (Pa.) 76-72 in the 2003-04 Rinso Marquette Tournament championship game.
LVC trailed by six (48-42) with 2:24 left before outscoring McDaniel 6-0 the rest of the way to force the bonus session. Gambino hit a pair of foul shots with 2:24 left before senior guard Allie Butler came up with a steal and found Johnson for a lay-up in transition with 59 seconds remaining to make it 48-46.
Twelve seconds later, Butler stole the ball at midcourt and drove into the paint where she was fouled. Butler made both free throws, and after a McDaniel timeout, Thompson had her lay-up blocked by Johnson, who scooped up the rebound. Lebanon Valley then called timeout with 11 seconds to go, but LVC turned the ball over just before the buzzer.
In overtime, Johnson dropped in a bucket 24 seconds in, giving the Valley its first lead since the 7:40 mark of the second half. But McDaniel answered with an Allison Biggs three-pointer, and with 3:53 left Johnson fouled out. Biggs’ trey kicked off an 11-1 Green Terror run that put the visitors up 59-51 with 1:59 left, and the Dutchmen were unable to get closer than six after that.
Both teams came out of the gates sluggish, as the two sides combined to make eight turnovers before a point was scored. After a Powell three-pointer with 17:17 on the clock marked the game’s first points, the game would go back and forth, with five ties and six lead changes over the opening 13:09.
The Green Terror enjoyed the largest lead of the half for either team after a Jamie Morningstar jumper made it 20-15 with 3:13 to go. McDaniel built its five-point lead by outscoring the Valley 6-0 over a 6:16 stretch. Lebanon Valley came back to score the final seven points of the half, however, and a Gambino lay-up 10 seconds before the buzzer gave her team a 22-20 halftime advantage.
In the second half, LVC led by five with 11:11 remaining before McDaniel used an 8-0 run to assume a 39-36 lead with 8:23 to go. Back-to-back buckets from junior guard Donna Geiger and Gambino briefly gave back the lead (40-39) to LVC with 7:40 left, but that’s when the Terror reeled off a 9-2 run to assume its late six-point lead.
