Baltimore, MD — Seniors Julie Miller (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) and Whitney Davis (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) and sophomore Kristen Phillips (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) all scored in double figures to lead John Hopkins (2-0) to an 85-75 win over Moravian Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays defeated the Greyhounds to win the Inaugural Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament.

Moravian took an early 8-7 lead in the first half and held onto that lead for over six and a half minutes. Hopkins tied the game at 19-19 as sophomore Andrea Dodrill (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr) converted both of her tries from the free throw line. The Blue Jays then took the lead at 8:55 on a layup by Miller. Hopkins never surrendered the lead.

Hopkins pushed its lead to double digits on another layup by Miller with 4:09 left in the half. Katie Rizman then converted two free throws for the Greyhounds to cut the lead back to nine. The Blue Jays had an answer for every Greyhound basket as the visitors were not able to get closer then seven points in the first half. Miller converted two free throws with five seconds remaining to make it a nine-point game. Kate Harrison took the inbounds pass and heaved the ball towards the basket just missing at the buzzer.

The Blue Jays came out firing in the second, pushing their lead to 19 points with 12:54 to play. Moravian trimmed away at Hopkins lead, cutting it to eight points at the 7:18 mark on a three-point play from Jessica Foran. Once again, Hopkins responded. Phillips was fouled as she scored on a layup and then went to the free throw line and converted for the three-point play. Sophomore Caitlin Sloane (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul’s) followed a missed layup by Foran with two free throws after being fouled by Amanda Brown.

The Greyhounds then begin whittling away at the Blue Jays lead. Moravian made it just a seven-point game with 4:39 to play after a layup by La’Toya Blake and then two free throws by Harrison. Kelly Applegate then hit two free throws just 11 seconds later to trim the lead to five. But that was as close the Greyhounds would get as the Blue Jays defense and excellent free throw shooting put the game away.

Miller finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds for her 16th career double-double. Davis shot 6-of-10 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc for 21 points. Phillips also posted a double-double, with 16 points and 14 rebounds – both career highs. For Moravian, Applegate scored a game-high 22 points while Foran chipped in 17.

Miller and Davis were named to the all-tournament team along with Foran and Applegate. Joining them on the all-tournament team were Aline Alzime from Ferrum and Nicole Estrada from the College of Staten Island. Davis was named the tournament MVP. Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, November 26 at Case Western in a 2:00 p.m. showdown.
