Susquehanna 97, Messiah 91

SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Six players finished in double figures as Susquehanna University built a 46-point halftime lead on its way to a 105-60 rout of Penn College in the opening round of the Pepsi/Weis Markets Tip-Off Tournament at O.W. Houts Gymnasium on Friday night.

The Crusaders (1-0) shot a blistering 66.7 percent (28-for-42) from the field in the first half, including 10-for-15 from three-point range, en route to a 75-29 halftime lead. Susquehanna will face King's, a 67-44 winner over College of New Jersey, in Saturday's championship game at 3:00 p.m.

Freshman Brandon Andersen led Susquehanna with game highs of 15 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, while juniors Brad Okonak and Kevin Cuff each scored 12 points in limited first-half action.

Susquehanna led 40-14 midway through the half and led by as many as 48 points at 72-24 with 1:52 left in the first half. With the big lead, the Crusaders starters did not take the court in the second half, and finished with a combined 40 points with no player seeing more than 12 minutes of action in the game.

Okonak and sophomore Zac Smith each went 4-for-5 from three-point range for the Crusaders in the first half, as Smith finished with 14 points. Junior Josh Robinson added 11 points and four assists in just 10 minutes of action while sophomore Andy Gaebel was the sixth Crusader in double figures with 10 points.

Craig Flint led the Wildcats (0-1) with 13 points and eight rebounds while Tom Little added 12 points and 12 boards, but Penn College shot just 31 percent (22-for-71) from the field for the game including 5-for-26 from three-point range.

The Crusaders finished at 48.1 percent (38-for-79) in the game but finished with an impressive 28 assists against just nine turnovers. Freshman Bryan Majors dished out five assists in 12 minutes to lead the Crusaders while Robinson and sophomore Todd DeNapoli added four assists apiece.

In the opener, Bob Nenstiel shot 7-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-3 from three-point range, and finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the Monarchs past the Lions. Brian Halligan was the lone player in double figures for College of New Jersey with 12 points and seven rebounds.
