CHESTER, Pa. — Messiah used a key run late in the opening half to take over first place in the Commonwealth Conference with a 74-61 victory over Widener at Schwartz Center.

Seniors Essien Ford and Malcolm Thomas (Baltimore, MD) each hit consecutive 3-pointers as Widener moved to 28-25 with 1:50 left in the opening half.

But Messiah (12-5, 6-0 CC) drilled a trio of 3-pointers to close the half for a 37-25 lead. Jonathan Boyd nailed two and Matt Henninger hit one for the Falcons, who shot 57 percent (13-of-23) from the floor in the half and 6-of-12 from 3-point range.

Messiah led by at least eight in the second half, ending the contest shooting 49 percent (25-of-51) from the field and 11-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Jared Yoder ended with 17 points and 10 rebounds to pace five players in double figures for the Falcons. Ryan Witmer had 13 points and seven rebounds, Boyd scored 12 points on four 3-pointers, Darryl Brown netted 11 and Matt Henninger added 10.

Thomas finished with 17 points and senior Terry Smith added 15 and eight rebounds for Widener (10-6, 5-1), which shot 50 percent (17-of-34) in the second half and 45 percent (28-of-62) overall. The Pride owned a 38-12 edge on points in the paint, but could not overcome hitting 4-of-13 from 3-point range.
