CHESTER, Pa. — Senior Terry Smith ended with 15 points and eight rebounds for Widener, which snapped a four-game skid with a 69-53 Commonwealth Conference victory over Elizabethtown at Schwartz Center.

Chad Piersol and Kris Kieres hit consecutive 3-pointers for Elizabethtown (8-14, 3-9 CC), which closed to 41-29 with 17:00 left. But Widener (12-10, 7-5 CC) scored the next nine points, including four from Smith, to open a comfortable 50-21 cushion with 13:03 remaining.

Smith shot 7-of-8 from the floor over 29 minutes and tied a career high with four blocked shots. Sophomore Nyere Miller scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and added a career-best eight steals.

Senior Malcolm Thomas had 10 points and six rebounds with freshman Bobby Edmunds also pouring in 10 points for Widener, which shot 51 percent (25-of-49) from the floor and owned a 32-27 rebounding edge.

Luke Ledyard scored 16 points with Greg Brizek contributing 13 for the Blue Jays, who shot 41 percent (23-of-56) from the floor and only attempted two free throws.

Widener posted a 32-27 rebounding edge and shot 14-of-18 from the stripe.

The game was stopped with 50 seconds left after freshman Patrick Kirby was taken off on a stretcher. He blocked Brizek’s shot and got hurt after diving for the loose ball.

Widener plays its final regular-season home game of the season Tuesday against Moravian as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team. The women’s contest begins at 6:00 pm, followed by the men’s contest at 8:00 pm.
